The Centre of Spanish Studies in Valencia recently concluded its highly anticipated April 2024 Transition Year course. This immersive program was designed to provide Irish students with a unique blend of language learning and cultural experiences, fostering both academic growth and personal development.
34 students from all over Ireland took part in the program.
Throughout their stay, the students engaged in a variety of enriching classes led by a team of dedicated CSS teachers: Francis, Irene, Valli, and Will. Each teacher brought a unique perspective and teaching style to the program, ensuring a well-rounded educational experience. Irene focused on enhancing conversational skills through interactive activities and discussions, making language learning both fun and practical. Francis, with his extensive knowledge of Spanish culture and history, offered classes that delved into the rich heritage of Valencia and Spain at large. Valli emphasized grammar and vocabulary, helping students improve their language accuracy and comprehension. Will, known for his energetic and engaging teaching methods, integrated modern Spanish media into his lessons, keeping the content relevant and interesting for the students. The students also looked at some past Leaving Cert papers, and got an introduction to what will be expected when they do their Leaving Cert Spanish exam in June 2026.
Beyond the classroom, students had the opportunity to stay with local host families, which greatly enriched their cultural immersion. These families welcomed the students with open arms, providing not only accommodation but also an authentic glimpse into everyday Spanish life. The bonds formed between the students and their host families were a testament to the warmth and hospitality of the Valencian people.
The program was packed with a wide range of activities that showcased the vibrant culture of Valencia. One of the highlights was a hands-on paella-making workshop, where students learned the secrets of this iconic Spanish dish from local chefs. This culinary adventure was complemented by a session on Valencian dancing, where students tried their hand (and feet) at traditional folk dances, gaining a deeper appreciation for local customs.
Exploration of the city was a key component of the course. Students embarked on bike tours, which provided a scenic and active way to discover Valencia’s diverse neighborhoods and landmarks. They visited the historic city centre, marveling at the architectural beauty and historical significance of sites like the Plaza de la Virgen and the Cathedral of Valencia. A tour of the Mestalla stadium, home of Valencia CF, offered a thrilling insight into Spain’s football culture.
Cultural excursions included a visit to the Falla Museum, where students learned about the city’s famous Fallas festival, a spectacular celebration featuring intricate sculptures and lively parades. A catamaran trip along the coast offered a refreshing break from their busy schedules, allowing students to enjoy the Mediterranean Sea’s natural beauty.
To further enhance their language skills, students participated in a language exchange program with local Spanish teenagers. These sessions provided a platform for authentic conversations, helping students practice their Spanish in a relaxed and informal setting. The experience was mutually beneficial, fostering cross-cultural friendships and mutual understanding.
These were just some of the activites that the students participated in. With afternoon activities and excursions every day and on two Saturdays, the course consisted of a total of 22 different activities.
As the program drew to a close, it was clear that the students had a great time. They not only improved their Spanish language skills but also gained a profound appreciation for Valencian culture and made memories that will last a lifetime. Now back in Ireland, the students carry with them the experiences and friendships formed during this unforgettable month in Valencia with CSS.
