Eighteen Leaving Cert students from Bush Secondary School in Co. Louth had the incredible opportunity to attend a Spanish Leaving Cert preparation course at CSS Valencia from February 13th to February 17th. Accompanied by their teachers, Sarah and Sarah, the students immersed themselves in Spanish language and culture, enhancing their linguistic skills and experiencing the vibrant city of Valencia firsthand.
During their stay, the students lived with local host families, which provided them with a unique opportunity to practice their Spanish in a natural, everyday setting. This immersive experience allowed them to gain deeper insights into Spanish culture, customs, and traditions while improving their language skills in a home environment.
The course, led by experienced teachers Jaime and Will, provided tailored lessons designed to prepare the students for their upcoming Leaving Cert exams. The interactive classes focused heavily on their Spanish oral exam, which will take place in April. Through structured speaking exercises, role-playing scenarios, and one-on-one practice sessions, the students gained confidence and fluency in their spoken Spanish, ensuring they are well-prepared for this crucial component of their assessment.
Beyond the classroom, the students participated in a variety of engaging afternoon activities that further enriched their learning experience. One of the highlights was a language exchange, where they conversed with native Spanish teenagers, reinforcing their oral communication skills in a real-world setting. A guided walking tour of Valencia allowed them to explore the city’s historic and cultural landmarks while practicing their Spanish in an authentic environment.
The group also took part in a hands-on cooking workshop, where they learned to prepare traditional Spanish dishes, deepening their appreciation for Spanish gastronomy. Another major highlight was their visit to the City of Arts and Sciences and the Oceanografic, where they marveled at Valencia’s impressive architecture and marine biodiversity.
This trip provided the students with an invaluable learning experience, blending academic preparation with cultural immersion. The combination of structured lessons, practical language use, and cultural exposure significantly enhanced their Spanish proficiency and confidence. The students returned to Ireland not only better prepared for their exams but also with unforgettable memories and a deeper appreciation for the Spanish language and culture.
