After classes in AIP, we had our lunch and headed to the CSS Academy for our speaking classes with Marta, we all enjoyed the class and then went to the bus stop to go surfing. We got the metrobus out to a small town, called ‘Pobla de Farnals’ 15 minutes outside of Valencia. We met our surfing instructor Ruben (who also happens to be my Spanish ‘brother’) and we got changed into our surfing gear!
Ruben is great fun! He is not only a surfing instructor, he’s also a primary school teacher and he’s always singing Spanish songs and teaching me cool phrases. He told me to use the word ‘tío’ at the end of sentences when I’m talking to friends…At first I thought he was joking with me but Gemma confirmed that ‘tío’, although it literally means ‘Uncle’, is also used to call someone ‘mate’… Okay Tío! We did a few stretches to warm up, during which Ruben asked us the Spanish of various body parts and checked if we understood certain instructions. Then we headed out to the sea where he showed us the basics of surfing and then we tried to catch some waves! I thought I would be a pro because I had done it last year, but it took a few attempts to stand up on the surfboard…and even then, it was only for a few seconds! Those few seconds are great though! Some of the girls have done surfing before in Ireland so they were able to do it really well! We all had great fun and headed back to our host families for the night at 8pm.
